High Plains Initiative announces steering committee

TORRINGTON  – A steering committee of residents and elected officials from Platte and Goshen counties has been named to lead the High Plains Initiative, a demonstration project of Building the Wyoming We Want.

The High Plains Initiative is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to explore growth-related issues and to think together about the future of Platte and Goshen counties. The steering committee is leading the initiative, with support from Building the Wyoming We Want. Cindy Witt, of Wheatland, and Julie Kilty, of Torrington, are the co-chairs of the steering committee.

Kilty said, “We have developed an incredible steering committee with representation from businesses, residents and elected officials.  All of us are very eager to start the public polling workshops where everyone’s input will be very valuable. At these workshops you will give input on how you would like to see our communities developed to preserve what you value most about living here in Wyoming. Plan to attend a workshop as they will be very enlightening and exciting.”

“With wind energy development and the potential huge oil play happening in the near future, now is right time to start the region talking about what we, as an area, want to look like in the next 20 to 50 years,” Witt said.

The High Plains Initiative process is focusing on four broad goals: to engage citizens and stakeholders in activities that explore growth issues and choices; to develop a range of scenarios based on public preferences; to explore consequences and implementation options for each scenario; and to create a vision and a strategy for Platte and Goshen counties based on the values of the residents.

Under the leadership of local economic development leaders, Platte and Goshen counties volunteered to become the first demonstration project for Building the Wyoming We Want in March 2010. Sponsoring organizations are the Platte County Economic Development Corp., the Goshen County Economic Development Corp. and the High Plains Economic Development District.  Please visit http://www.buildingwyoming.org/highplains/ for more information on the High Plains Initiative.
